What could immediately remember about East Java? Of course Surabaya. In addition to being the capital of the province of East Java, Surabaya is the second largest city after Jakarta. With a population of about 3 million people, Surabaya has become the city of Metropolis with some of the rich diversity in it. Additionally, Surabaya has also been a center of business, commerce, industry, and education in Indonesia. 

Surabaya is known as City of Heroes, this has happened since the people of Surabaya battle against Dutch troops in Indonesia's independence revolution. 

Name Surabaya, according to its etymology, derived from the word ata Sura and Baya or Boyo Suro, the Java language. Suro is a type of shark, being boyo is a Javanese term for alligator. According to myth, the two animals are the most powerful animals also became a symbol of the city of Surabaya to date. But others argue that the name is taken from the term Surabaya Ing Sura Baya, meaning "brave face of danger". 

Surabaya is a major port and a commercial trade center in eastern Indonesia, and is now one terbesa cities in Southeast Asia. Together with Lamongan the northwest, west Gresik, Bangkalan in the northeast, south Sidoarjo, Mojokerto and Jombang in southwest into unity called the Gate Kertosusila, as Greater Jakarta in Jakarta and surrounding areas.

Surabaya's economy is also influenced by the recent growth in foreign industries and industry segments that will continue to evolve, especially in terms of property, where skyscrapers, malls, plaza, apartments and five-star hotel will continue to build each year. 

As a metropolis, Surabaya inhabited by multi-ethnic and many tribes, like the citizens of Chinese, Javanese, Batak, Madurese, Balinese, Bugis, Sunda and more. There are also citizens of foreign countries including Malaysia, China, India, Arab and European. 

The language used most everyday uses the Java language, a dialect Suroboyoan. This dialect is quite different from the language of the Java Central Java Surakarta or Yogyakarta. Dialect Suroboyoan have the intonation and height, and seemed hard. 

Although Surabaya is much influenced by the diverse cultures, but cultural authenticity is still alive and thriving today. Various indigenous culture can be seen from various events such as puppet arts, ludrug, remo dance and other Javanese culture. 

In terms of tourism, like a city full of history, Surabaya has several attractions that can be visited are related to the history of the past. Plus, Surabaya has the culinary diversity that is always sought after by tourists who come, like: salad uleg, rawon, duck rice, mussels lontong, Longtong racing and much more.
